Choosing the right markers and pencils for craft projects depends on the type of surface to be decorated. Specialized markers, pens, and pencils are available for working on paper, fabric, wood, glass, and other materials.
Chalk based pencils:
Chalk pencils come in various colours, and can be sharpened like regular pencils They are great for marking fine lines onto fabrics. Their availability in different colours, means they will work on both light and dark fabrics. The chalk marks can be easily brushed off at the end of a project.
Vanishing ink markers:
Vanishing ink markers usually come with purple ink. The marks and lines fade away in a few hours so they are most suitable for projects that will be stitched within a short period of time. They are great for applique and for transferring patterns. Heat can set the ink so fabric should not be ironed until lines have disappeared
Water Soluble markers:
These are felt tip markers with water soluble ink. Lines marked with these will remain visible until cold water is applied to them and they dissolve away. These markers work best on light coloured fabrics. Heat will set the ink so fabric should not be ironed until after the lines and marks are removed.
Permanent markers:
Pigma Micron and Tsukineko Fabrico are two permanent markers that are perfect for labeling and signing a finished quilt.
Hera markers:
This type of marker uses no ink or chalk and marks fabric with a crease instead. It is a spatula shaped tool with a blunt edge.
