Punch needle embroidery is a type of embroidery in which a specialized tool, the punch needle, is used to create loops of thread on the fabric. This results in a textured, three-dimensional look to the embroidery, much like the hooked rug technique. The tool, called the punch needle, is a hollow needle with a handle. The thread is passed through the needle which is then pushed into the weave of the fabric and pulled back out. This creates a loop on the front of the fabric. Different effects can be produced by varying the depth to which the needle is pushed into the fabric and the thickness of the thread used.
Punch needle embroidery can be worked on many different types of fabric, including cotton, linen, and denim. Monks cloth is commonly used.
